Alstroemeria (Princess Lily / Peruvian Lily) Liliaceae
Rich flowering, compact growth, suitable for patio and garden. Funnel shaped 6-tepaled flowers, 1 1/2 - 4 inch long. Contact with foliage may aggravate skn allergies. Flowers in sun and shade, Semi winter hard. Fleshy rhizome-like tubers spread to form clumps. I overwintered this container outside with mulch, grouped with other containers and covered - will see if it returns for 2006. Well, it did not make it. I did not get any in 2006, but plan of finding some fro 2007. A friend in Louisville says hers come back year after year and she does nothing to them.
CULTIVATION: Plant tubers 8 inches deep in late summer or early autumn. During growing season water freely and apply a balanced liquid fertilzer monthly. Water sparingly in winter. Outdoors, grown in moist but well drained fertile soil in sun or partial shade. Mulch for the first 2 years where not reliably hardy and plant at the base of a warm wall.
PROPAGATION: Sow seed in containers in a cold frame as soon as ripe. Plant out seedlings by the potful to avoid damaging the tubers. Divide well established clumps in autumn or very early spring.
PESTS AND DISEASES: Gray mold on flowers can be a problem. A variety of diseases also occur. Prone to spider mites and slugs.
