Asclepias (Butterfly Weed)
Native wildflower. Attracts butterflies. Butterflies lay offspring on plant. Keep dry autumn and winter. Striking orange flowers in mid summer, followed by green fruit pods 3.5 - 5 inches long. I love seeing the orange across the yard - very attractive in bloom. The seed pods ripen to a yellowish brown then open to release silky "parachutes" to drift away in autumn. Contact with the milky sap may irritate the skin. Slow to emerge in spring. Looks good and lasts well in vase.

CULTIVATION: Fertile, well drained, loamy soil in full sun.
PROPAGATION: Sow seed in cold frame in early spring or divide in spring. Root based cuttings in spring.
PESTS AND DISEASES: Whiteflies and spider mites may be problems under glass. Aphids and mealy bugs are common when flowering. Rust and baterial fungal leaf spots are quite common in the S.E. U.S.

A. tuberosa
