Each flower and tree is interesting to see ~ watch closely as each unfolds.

Astilbe
Striking panicles 7 - 18 inches long, with tiny flowers in summer. The dry flowers provide winter interest through winter. Grow in damp border, woodland garden or waterside plantings. Soil must not be allowed to dry out. If regularly watered, foliage will remain attractive throughout the growing season.
Note: I have found it easier to grow here (zone 6) than ferns ~ foliage provides basically the same display - with flowering bonus. Average, medium, well-drained soils.

CULTIVATION: Moist, humus rich soil in shade or part shade. Can grow in boggy sites in full sun. Will not thrive in alkaline or clay soils that dry out in summer. Divide clumps when overcrowding occurs (every 3-4 years) to maintain vigor and flower quality. Discard old, woody rhizomes.
PROPAGATION: Divide in early spring when dormant. Replant divisions immediately or pot them to plant in early summer when re-established.
PESTS AND DISEASES: Tarnished plant bug, powdery mildew, bacterial leaf spots, and cercospora leaf spots. I have not had any problems.
