If you have a dog and a garden expect a few accidents - not all plants will survive a dog and it's toy. If you can not handle the loss - do not put them together.

Cimicifuga (Bugbane, Black snakeroot)
Magnificent clump forming perennial with purplish-black foliage complemented by "bottlebrush" clusters of fragrant pinkish-white flowers in mid-summer. Foliage has an odor which repels many insects ( I do not notice an odor thankfully. Does best in rich, moisture retentive soil. Requires little attention.
2004: Wonderful color. No bloom 2003 or 2004. Plant was approx 18-24" x 12" on 2004. Transplanted, did well with the move - then the dog and ball got the best of the specimen. I need to replace this one - I really liked the color and foliage, and Yes - I really like the dog too!

CULTIVATION: Grows in moist, fertile, preferably humus rich soil in partial shade.
PROPAGATION: Sow seed in containers in a cold frame as soon as ripe, to germinate the following spring. Divide in spring.
PESTS AND DISEASES: Can be affected by rust and leaf-feeding insects such as tarnished plant bug. No pests or disease problems seen so far.
