Daphne
Genus of about 50 species of deciduous, semi-evergreen, or evergreen shrubs. All parts, including the seeds, are highly toxic if ingested, and contact with the sap may irritate skin. 2004: Summer night temp dropped to 50's - 2 or 3x's leaves died back and did not come back. Next time I try this plant it will have to be a different location.
CULTIVATION: Grow in moderately fertile soil, humus rich, well-drained but not dry soil. Mulch to keep roots cool. Most prefer slightly alkaline to slightly acidic soil in sun or partial shade. All reent transplanting and so are best transplanted from containers. Mature specimens may die suddenly for no aparent reason. Keep pruning to a minimum.
PROPAGATION: Sow seed in containers in a cold frame as soon as ripe. Insert softwood cuttings in early and mid-summer. Graft in winter or layer in spring.
PESTS AND DISEASES: Fasciation, Southern blight, tobacco ringspot virus, Verticillium wilt, crown and root rot, Botrytis twig blight, aphids, and scale insects are common.
