Dicentra Hybrid 'Zestful'(Bleeding Heart)
Refreshing spring time displays of heart-shaped, pink and white flowers borne on gracefully nodding racemes. For best effect, grow in part shade and provide regular water. Plants will go dormant if allowed to go dry, but will return the following spring. Keep watered during dry spells. This plant has not been a winner in my landscape yet, maybe in 2007 it will become a show stopper. It is there, but usually goes dormant before it gets any growth to it in the spring. It does get watered by sprinklers often, so the area is not dry by any means. Guess I could try moving to a new area.
CULTIVATION: Moist, fertile, loamy, humus rich soil, preferably neutral or slightly alkaline, in partial shade, where they can self seed freely.
PROPAGATION: Sow seed in containers in a cold frame as soon as ripe or in spring. Divide carefully in early spring or after the leaves have died down. Hybrids may produce a wide range of seedlings that vary in foliage and flower characteristics.
PESTS AND DISEASES: Downy mildew, wilt, rust and fungal leaf spot can occur. Slugs and snails can attack new growth.
