Echinacea
Stiff, purple petals tinged with red surround a central, spiky seed cone. Flowerheads to 7 inches across, with dark orange disks, the ray florets deep purple and more horizontal than in other cultivars. Attracts birds and butterflies to the garden. Seed heads are attractive in autumn and winter. Tough, self reliant plant rarely disturbed by pests, disease or drought. Winter interest, seed heads loved by finches. Sept 2004: Moved, pear bed - drier location. Hardiness: -30 to 10F.
CULTIVATION: Grow in deep, well-drained, humus rich soils in full sun, although they will tolerate some shade. Cut back stems as the blooms fade to encourage further flower production and to prevent excessive self seeding.
PROPAGATION: Sow seed at 55F in spring every 3 to 4 years. Insert root cuttings from late autumn to early winter. Deadheading prolongs flowering.
PESTS AND DISEASES: Leaf miners, powdery mildew, bacterial spots, and gray mold are problems. Vine weevils may attack roots.
