return to Perennials

Heuchera micrantha (Coral Bells) 'Palace Purple'
Clump-forming perennial which features a basal mound of maple or ivy-like, long-petioled leaves (3-5" wide) attractive deep purple above and beet red beneath. Foliage color may fade to a bronze green in hot summers. Tiny, pinkish white, bell-shaped flowers in open, airy panicles are borne on slender, wiry, dark red stems extending well above the mound of leaves typically to a height of 15-24" in late spring to early summer. Amend soil with organic matter for best results. Water regularly during growing season, but avoid winter wetness. Mulch to help winter protect.

CULTIVATION: Grow in fertile, moist but well drained soil in sun or partial shadel full shade may be tolerated in a moist site. The woody rootstock tends to grow upward, so mulch annually; eventually lift and replant in late summer or early autumn, with just the crown above the soil surface, or replace with new plants.
PROPAGATION: Sow seed of species in containers in a cold frame in spring. Divide species and cultivars in autumn.
PESTS AND DISEASES: Foliar nematoads, powdery mildew, rust, and leaf spots may occur.
