Hosta - Night before Christmas
Topped with lavender flowers on 30" scapes in early summer. Leaves are pointed and slightly twisted, white with a wide green margin. The leaves are 8" long x 3" wide on this vigorous grower. In very late summer, the old foliage turns solid green, allowing more food to be produced for the upcoming season.
CULTIVATION: Grow in fertile, moist but well drained soil. Hostas are shade tolerant and grow best with full morning sun in northern climates, and filtered shade in S. North America. Hostas will tolerate drought, although a summer mulch to retain moisture is usually beneficial.
PROPAGATION: Sow seed in containers in a cold frame in spring. Divide plants inlate sumer or early spring. Many new hostas are propagated through tissue culture.
PESTS AND DISEASES: Particularly susceptible to damage from slugs and snails. Container grown plants re vulnerable to vine weevil. Viruses and foliar nematoads may also be problems.
