return to Perennials

Houttuynia Saururacae
Very colorful, heart shaped leaves brilliantly marked with yellow, green, bronze, and red. Blooms in summer. Provides quick color for containers ground cover or border front (I have Chameleon - and it is less spreading, I would not consider it a groundcover in drier areas). Thrives in any wet location. Attains best color in full sun.
2004: Returned, very slow to grow.
2006: Returned, still slow growing. Expanded the inground sprinkler to cover this area and the additional water does allow for faster growth/spread.

CULTIVATION: Grow in moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist soil in full sun or dappled shade; variegated cultivars produce greener leaves in shade. On wet soils where marginally hardy, apply a loose but deep winter mulch to protect the roots. At the waters edge, grow in 3-4 inches of water; in shallow ponds, the spread may be limited by planting in a container.
PROPAGATION: Sow seed in containers in a cold frame as soon as ripe. Divide rhizomes in spring. Root softwood cuttings in late spring.
PESTS AND DISEASES: Snails and slugs may be a problem.
